When you arrive in Darwin you can sense the cosmopolitan and thriving atmosphere of this historic tropical north Australian city. You will be personally met at the Ghan railway station by a representative and transferred to your Darwin hotel. You can relax and use the rest of the day to explore your hotel and its facilities, perhaps take a stroll around the neighborhood and central Darwin.

Day 1

Depart Adelaide

Your remarkable journey to Darwin begins today at 12:15. Once you’ve settled in and the big wheels start turning, make your way to the classically styled Queen Adelaide Restaurant carriage for a delicious lunch, accompanied by your choice of fine wines. The afternoon is yours to relax, socialise, and get acquainted with the novelty of rail travel. After a sumptuous dinner, join other guests for a few late-night drinks or head to your cabin to settle in early and await the sights of your first incredible outback sunrise the next day.

Day 2

The Ghan (The Centre)

Witness an unforgettable outback sunrise with a steaming cup of coffee this morning and a brief stop in Marla. Back onboard, sink into pure indulgence in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant for brunch and relax as the mallee scrub makes way for the iconic outback scenery of Alice Springs.

Off-board, spend the afternoon at leisure; you could visit local landmarks, take a front-row seat a spectacular bird show at the Desert Park or experience a majestic camel ride across ochre land. Back on the train, get to know your fellow passengers in the Outback Explorer Lounge before freshening up for dinner - topped off with a cheeky nightcap, of course!

Day 3

The Ghan (Katherine to Darwin)

Welcome to Katherine! Upon reaching the Northern Territory gaze in wonder at towering sandstone cliffs as you cruise lazily on the Katherine River*. Alternatively, spend the day with the local Aboriginal people, sharing their culture, learning to basket weave, spear throw and play the Didgeridoo. A late lunch awaits back on board, then relax with a glass of fine wine and savour the last few hours of this epic journey as you roll into Darwin at 5:30pm. Transfer to your hotel, and ease back into life on the land with a bit of harbour exploration.

Day 4

Darwin Hop on Hop off Bus Tour

Explore Australia's gateway to the Northern Territory's 'Top End' on a Darwin bus tour. Hop on for a laid-back sightseeing adventure to discover the best of Darwin, including lush jungle in the Botanic Gardens, exotic street food at the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, crocodiles at Crocosaurus Cove and fascinating local history at the Military Museum. The tropical northern city of Darwin is located on a massive and spectacular harbour on the Timor Sea. It has a multicultural population of 129,062 people, that is a melting-pot cultures from more than 50 countries, who pride themselves on their unique and friendly laid-back lifestyle. Darwin has year round balmy weather and has many popular attractions including Aquascene, Burnett House, Casuarina Coastal Reserve, Charles Darwin National Park, Cullen Bay Marina, Darwin Convention Centre, Deckchair Cinema, East Point Reserve & Lake Alexander, Fannie Bay Gaol, George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, Indo Pacific Marine, Lyons Cottage, Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, Museum & Art Gallery of the NT, Northern Territory Parliament House, USS Peary Memorial and the fascinating World War II Oil Storage Tunnels. There is plenty to see and do in our magnificent and vibrant Top End.

Day 5

Depart Darwin

Please catch a taxi to Darwin airport for your flight home. We can also book additional nights in Darwin if you would like to visit Kakadu National Park, Katherine Gorge and Litchfield National Park.

The Gold Service Single is a comfortable sleeper cabin option that offers all the luxurious inclusions of the Gold Service Twin.

Your comfortable seat with full leg extension bench seat by day converts to a cosy bed by night. Your own complimentary, quality Australian-made toiletries are included. There are six music and commentary channels to choose from and numerous power supply outlets to keep your devices charged.
