Day 11

Transpacific Cruise - Papeete (Tahiti)

Papeete is the lively capital of Tahiti – a figure-eight-shaped island formed by the eruption of two volcanoes, it's become a go-to spot for a tropical adventure.

A bustling urban centre, Papeete feels more French than anywhere else in Tahiti. Head to the centre of the city to see the vibrant Municipal Market, where you can pick up coffee and chocolate croissants, sample fresh produce or shop for hand-carved Tiki statues. See the waves crash against the volcanic black-sand beach at Plage du Taharuu. Cruise to Tahiti and hike through the verdant jungle at Fautaua Valley – don't miss the dramatic waterfall that cascades about 300 metres down into a natural pool.

Tip For the day: The Municipal Market is a morning affair, so be sure to visit there first. Rush-hour sees traffic jams on the road, so leave plenty of time to get back to the port.

Day 12

Transpacific Cruise - Bora Bora (French Polynesia)

Loosely translated from ancient Tahitian, Bora Bora means "created by the gods" — and when you set foot on this heavenly island in French Polynesia, you won't have any trouble understanding how it got its name. Crystalline turquoise waters and a vibrant coral reef surround a string of Motus — tiny islets around the main island, just across the lagoon. Relax in the powder-soft white sand of Matira Beach, and breathe in the fresh scent of Tiare Tahiti, the distinctive white gardenia that grows wild here. Dive or snorkel among the coral reef just off Sofitel Marara. Or hike iconic Mount Otemanu, the lushly forested extinct volcano at the centre of the island.

Tip for the day:

Bora Bora's cuisine brings a mix of French, Asian and Tahitian flavours to the local seafood bounty. Looking for a breakfast fit to fuel a hike up Mount Otemanu. Try firi firi, a Tahitian doughnut that's also made with the ever-present coconut milk. Don't leave without trying the French Polynesian speciality, Poisson Cru, a ceviche of Tahitian ahi tuna in coconut milk and lime juice.

Day 13

Transpacific Cruise - Moorea (French Polynesia)

Moorea is the picture-perfect vision of an ideal island paradise. Formed by volcanic activity, this heart-shaped island hidden a few short miles off the Tahiti mainland holds beaches that look out to the brightest blue waters you can imagine, and the soaring green peaks of the mountains here are the stuff of legend. Head to Tiki Village to experience a traditional Polynesian dance. Hike up to Belvedere Lookout for views of famous Cook's Bay and volcanic Mount Tohivea. Go snorkelling in the lagoon at Opunohu Bay, or check out the Moorea Dolphin Center to get up-close-and-personal with nature's cutest, most intelligent sea creatures.

Tip of the day:

The coconut milk you buy in a shop is nothing like real island coconut milk – be sure to try some! Head to the Belvedere lookout point before 10 a.m. to snap the best photo overlooking the island.

Beautifully preserved 1930s architecture is Napier’s special point of difference.

Known for its wine, Napier boasts a cafe culture enjoyed year-round thanks to its sunny, Mediterranean-like climate. Nearby you can find the world's largest colony of gannets – a sleek, white sea bird known for its dramatic plunge-dive fish-catching technique – which can be viewed on a hike or a tractor ride on the beach.

Day 21

Transpacific Cruise - Wellington (New Zealand)

Wellington, New Zealand's capital, sits at the southern tip of the North Island, roughly the middle of the country. According to Maori legend, New Zealand's two main islands are associated with the god Maui; the South Island is his canoe and the North Island is the fish he caught. Wellington sits in that fish's mouth. Wellington is New Zealand's second-biggest city, after Auckland. Despite its smaller size, it has an abundance of cultural attractions like the National Library, National Archives, theatres and excellent museums. The city is also home to the country's film industry and is nicknamed Wellywood.

Transpacific Cruise - Picton (New Zealand)

Picton, on the northeast corner of New Zealand's South Island, provides access to the beautiful Marlborough Sounds and to New Zealand's most famous wine region, Marlborough, home to the world's best Sauvignon Blanc. Known as the sunniest place in the country, this small town of about 3,000 is named for Sir Thomas Picton, who fought at the Battle of Waterloo. The pretty harbour town has several cafes and shops, plus a market when cruise ships are in port. The area is home to five different types of dolphins, orca and rare birds.
